How big should your wedding cake be?

How big should your wedding cake be?

How big does your wedding cake really need to be?

Such an important question and with a little for thought you can have the perfect size wedding cake for yourwedding.

There are quite a few things to consider when deciding how big your wedding cake should be. The first is how many guests you are having. It's pretty simple to work it out, basically don't cater to 20% of your guests when it comes to the cake. So, if you are having 100 guests, you will only need a wedding cake big enough for 80 .

Think about it for a minute, most weddings area 4 course meal. Canapes and drinks on arrival, entrée, main and dessert. Plus the alcohol! Not everyone will want to eat cake after all that food.

That brings me to the second consideration. Serving size. There are a couple of different serving sizes that are options for wedding cakes. Coffee portion and dessert portion.

Portion Control

That brings me to the second consideration. Serving size. There are a couple of different serving sizes that are suitable for wedding cakes. Coffee portion and dessert portion.

Coffee and dessert portions

Coffee and dessert portions

A dessert portion is perfect for when there is the option of the wedding cake being dessert. Measuring 1 inch by 2 inch and 12 cm in length. It's generous without being "too much".

A coffee portion is half the size of a dessert portion. 1 inch by 1 inch and 12cm in length. This portion size is not so generous that after a 3 course meal your guests will be overwhelmed by it. Coffee portions are the most recommended for wedding cakes and sizing your cake based on a coffee portion will ensure you are not left with afull tier of wedding cake at the end of the wedding.

Dummy Tiers

When you want your wedding cake to be  something grand that is maybe 4, 5 or even 6 tiers and you aren't having 180 guests then having some dummy tiers or fake tiers is definitely an option.

Dummy cakes are made from Styrofoam and then covered in fondant and decorated. The only draw back is that you can only have dummy tiers if you're having a fondant cake. Buttercream and naked cakes are off the table.

A dummy cake vis such a great way to add height to your wedding cake. Tall cakes are very elegant and can add something special to the styling ofyour wedding. With so many stunning wedding cake designs to choose from why be limited by what size wedding cake you need when you can have the wedding cake you want!
